FOREWORD

JOSE TORIBIO MEDINA

coins

Jose Toribio Medina, the famous Chilean author and collector, from ivhom a selection of s and medals is offered at this auction, ivas a man with a picturesque personality who

distinguished himself as a writer, historian, researcher of nianuscripts and collectoi of various art objects and who was especially outstanding in the field of Numismatics.

Medina’s literary works are numerous (about 300), most of them studies connected with the history of the Colonial era and the National Renaissance of the American countries, in particular, of Latin America.

His contribution in the field of Numismatics was_ especially renoivned. He published 21 works which have an outstanding position in the numismatic literature of the world and of Latin America in particular. Many of them constitute, to date,^ the only source of informa- tion for authors and collectors interested in the Numismatics of Latin America.

His studies were based on direct observations made on trips to Spain and to the capitals of different Latin American countries where he visited the mints, libraries and archives of these countries in search of documents, numismatic pieces and historical data. In this respect, it is relevant to point out that the “Archive de las Indias” in Madrid was one of the sources of informaton of special importance and usefulness.

Among his most important works are: “Monedas Obsidionales Hispano Americanas”, “Monedas de Chile”, and “Monedas Hispano Americanas”. In the latter, Medina narrates the history of the mints in several Latin American countries among which are Mexico, Santo Domingo, Lima, Nuevo Reino (Colombia), Santiago de Chile and Guatemala. The description of these institutions is illustrated with the corresponding historical documents.

In the field of Medals, his most important work is “Las Medullas de Jura” of the Kings of Spain. In this respect, it is fitting to point out that Jose Toribio Medina wms the owner of the most complete collection of this type of medals, having collected as many as about 400 different pieces. The same can be said of his collection of European coins con- nected with the conquest of the Americas and the intercontinental wars.

One of the characteristic features of his works is the minute descriptive analysis of every numismatic piece including data concerning engravers and mint officers.

The Government of Chile has made available to the National Library of the country a special fund for the reproduction of Medina’s works. Originally, his works were published in small numbers and therefore some of them are now difficult to obtain. The aim of this enter- prise is to remedy this situation and bring the works of this distinguished author within the reach of all who are interested. At the present time, his complete works can be found in the “Sala Medina” of the National Library in Santiago.

Jose Toribio Medina was born in Santiago de Chile on October 12, 1852 and died in that city in October 1930 at the age of 78, leaving behind a cultural heritage worthy of appreciation and admiration throughout the world.

Plain edge, UNC. Engraver; (Below bust in script) F. Gordillo, F. Mo 43mm. Gold. .And almost uncirculated. This handsome 8 reales proclamation is undoubtedly one of the most treasured pieces of this collection. .As for rarity Herrera only catalogues this 8 rcalcs in silver and Rosa speaks of one known in gold in the hands of the well-known Sevillan numismatist Sr. Sanches which was originally owned by the Viceroy of Iturrigaray. .A similar specimen from the Virgil Brand collection catalogued by us in November. 1964 Lot 1608. Sold for $1,600.00. VVe expect this to bring at least $2,000.00 and possibly $2,500.00.

GUATEMALA

999 8 Reales. Philip IV - Medina wrote on page 85 of his book “Las Monedas Obsidionales Hispano-Americanas” . . . There existed in Guatemala a number of Cobs originating from the Potosi mint which were of lower silver con- tent than the normal issues. These motivated the ordinance of 1650 and which later created what was called “La baja de la Moneda” or devaluation.

■At that time an 8 real was actually worth 6 reales. By then a good many of these pieces had entered Guatemala and it was ordered in 1653 that a stop be put to their circulation. Two reales were allowed to be used until 1663 and at that time it was ordered that this denomination still available be counterstamped with a crown and an F and returned to circulation. It appears at the time when Medina wrote his book that he was under the im- ])ression that only two reales were counterstamped and returned to circula- tion, but then he continues ... 1 have not yet seen any of these. But in the section of this book devoted to uncertain is.sucs he is illustrating two var- ieties of 8 reales and one 4 real which in effect have this particular counter- stamp crown with an F Ijclow ; this then leaves me to be sure that not only were the two reales counterstamped as the records indicate hut that in fact all other existing issues were counterstamped and returned to use in Guate- mala. It is now concluded that these were in fact the coins c/s at that time.

.See Dasi 286, Burzio 184. .Similar coin sold for $360 in Brand sale 1964. This specimen, Medinas own illustration Plate #328. is expected with the ever- increasing interest on Latin American rarities to bring. PHOTO ($400.-500.)
